Enjoy the break, read, read, read and we will see you in August!
It’s Almost Summer Reading Time!
Dear McAlpine Families,
The school year is drawing to a close, but we don't want to lose that reading momentum we have gained this year! To help our students continue reading over the summer, we have created a summer reading challenge.
Each student is challenged to read 1,000 minutes before school begins in August. For every 20 minutes read, your child will color in a square to keep track of time read. This can be reading alone, reading to a sibling or friend, reading with a grown-up, or being read to. The goal is for independent reading, but if your child needs support, then any time with books is valuable!
Time sheets will be turned in to your child’s teacher in August.
All students who turn in a timesheet with at least 100 minutes read will be eligible to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge celebration.
Students who read at least 500 minutes will receive special recognition.
Students who read 1,000 minutes will receive a certificate at the celebration.
The class per grade level that reads the most minutes will receive an ice cream sundae party, so try to read above and beyond 1000 minutes!
On the back of each sheet is a list of recommended topics for reading, based on units of study for your child’s upcoming school year. Additionally, there is a list of books that may be enjoyable for summer reading but this is not an exhaustive list; allow your child choice and voice in their reading this summer.
Enjoy the break, read, read, read and we will see you in August!
